  2. CSE 111 - Programming with functions will start. It is a two-credit course and will replace two credits of the old CS 241 course. CSE 250 - Data Science programming will be taught in the fall and will be a replacement for the second two credits of CS 241.

Program changes

Spring 2020 starts significant changes in our data science course work. All of the computer science courses in the major will be replaced with new courses under the label CSE as a result of the updates the computer science department is making to their programs. The math department will also introduce a new calculus course for data science and analytics majors. Finally, the design thinking courses have moved from the construction management department to the art department. We will have the following new data science courses that will start in the 2020-2021 school year.

  • CSE 150 - Data Intuition and Insight (Spring 2020 2-credits)
  • MATH 119 - Applied Calculus for Data Analysis (Spring 2020 4-credits)
  • CSE 250 - Data Science Programming (Fall 2020 2-credits)
  • CSE 451 - Big Data Programming and Analytics (Winter/Spring 2021 3-credits)

Here are the new names and numbers for the design thinking courses. We will substitute these courses for any of the previous courses in old catalogs.

  • ART 231 - Design Thinking: Inquiry and Innovation (Spring 2020 3-credits)
  • ART 432 - Design Thinking: Customer Experience (Spring 2020 3-credits)
  • ART 434 - Design Thinking: Agile Product Management (Spring 2020 3-credits)

You can see the course names and degree structure here.

Growth

We now have 22 graduates since 2017. All that applied to jobs are currently working using skills from their major in a data science or business analytics role. We are continuing to grow and look forward to the new challenges ahead. We have over 130 declared majors and close to 180 declared majors and minors.

Society continues to be a great learning and development space for our students as well. We continue to grow in size each semester. Please make society an active part of your BYU-I experience.
