New Minors and Courses in 2026

Exciting News on Minors and Classes

This year, we proposed two new minors: AI Engineering and Data Engineering. Both were approved and are scheduled to start in 2026. In the process of developing this proposal, we proposed a new AI engineering course to be hosted in the Computer Science and Engineering Department.

AI Engineering Minor

The AI engineering minor is the result of the transition from the Machine Learning emphasis in the Computer Science degree. The Data Science program faculty and the Computer Science faculty spent the last year developing plans to create a minor that Computer Science students could add to their degrees. Many on the BYU-I campus will also find joy and value in the minor. The AI engineering minor is integrated into the Data Science degree, starting in 2026.

CSE 455 will focus on the ‘last mile’ of AI by helping students build systems that leverage AI to address business-driven needs.

Data Engineering Minor

This minor will provide BYU-I students with the skills to meet the industry’s needs in Extracting, Transforming, and Loading data to drive insights and value in the modern data ecosystem. This minor overlaps with the Data Science degree but will be a valuable addition to the education of Data Science majors.
